“Sequestro” Puts Brazil in the Running for the Documentary Oscar

Extra presented Jorge W. Atalla’s Sequestro as a possible Brazilian contender for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature after its international reception at the 10th Beverly Hills Film Festival.

The report noted that the film left Beverly Hills with awards for Best Documentary and Best Director and received a five-minute standing ovation. It described the documentary’s close access to São Paulo’s Anti-Kidnapping Division and compared its potential international impact to that of José Padilha’s Bus 174.

The article emphasized that the film confronts kidnapping through real testimony and observed experience rather than sensational reconstruction. Atalla said the production intended to submit the documentary for Oscar consideration, arguing that the accounts of former captives carried more force than staged screen violence.

Most significantly for 41 Days, the report already recorded Atalla’s intention to develop a fictional version of Sequestro, possibly with an American actor. That early plan is the creative path now continued by this feature project.
